Terracotta Elephant

Hi Everyone

I had a lovely day with everyone at Coleman's Craft Warehouse yesterday. As usual there was tea and coffee with biscuits and cake on offer on their big demo day and always a happy smile and a warm welcome. It was great to meet up with old friends as well as make some new ones :) and I was pleased to see there was interest for both napkin decoupage and Efco's new Easy Rust. Easy Rust Paste is not only great for creating terracotta ornaments as seen below but can also be used to create rust effects on altered art projects in the same way as Prima's Rust Paste Set - more on that in my next blog post ;)

For those who are interested here are the instructions for how I created the terracotta Elephant...

First you need a paper mache elephant...

Then basecoat it with a good layer of Efco Easy Rust Paste. When dry add touches of the other Efco Easy Rust Paste. (It doesn't matter which way round you do this..ie dark first, light second or vice versa.)

When dry use either pva glue or Mod Podge to add patches of gold leaf...

Then roughly cover over the gold leaf with more Easy Rust Paste except for the tusks and eyes...

Coat the exposed gold leaf with sealer (or weatherproof varnish if you are planning on keeping your elephant outside) to stop the gold leaf from tarnishing.

What you will find is that the 'hidden' gold leaf peaks out in places giving the whole thing a lift or a little life.

As Easy Rust Paste is weather resistant, provided you have thoroughly covered your elephant (including the soles of his/her feet) you can keep it in the garden. It's a very cheap way of creating terracotta sculptures for your summer garden!

Of course if you prefer your elephants a touch more colourful then you could always try napkin decoupage instead... ;)

I used one napkin to create this decorative effect. First I base coated the elephant with white acrylic paint and left it to dry. In the meantime I 'cut' out the butterfly and flower motifs from the napkin using a fine wet brush to trace around each one, gently pulling them apart. Then I painted a thin coat of Mod Podge on a small area and gently patted a motif in place, applying more Mod Podge over the top working from the centre of the motif to the outer edges. I repeated this for each motif until the elephant was covered. Then I applied 2-3 more coats of Mod Podge all over, allowing 20 minutes drying time between coats.

Again this elephant can go outside in the garden provided you use the Mod Podge Exterior paste and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Easy Rust is a must...

Hi Everyone

It's been a hectic few weeks so sorry for not getting a chance to blog and it's going to have to be a short one this week too as I'm jetting off to Belfast tomorrow to see my niece perform in her first Youth Musical Theatre summer production. I do hope everyone is enjoying the sunny weather but still finding time for a little therapeutic creativity on the side. ;)

If you haven't discovered Efco's Easy Rust yet then check this out...

It's a paste that can be used on wood, plastic, metal, ceramic and even Efco's Papp Art shapes such as this gecko. When dry it is both weather resistant and lightfast!

The paste comes in two colours... the terracotta (as seen above) and a darker brown. It's also available as a lighter coloured liquid in a bottle.

You can mix the pastes on the same piece to give greater texture and depth to the colour...

Using Easy Rust paste is a great way to make cheap papier maché pieces look like expensive terracotta. Provided you give your Papp Art two good coats of the paste making sure that no papier maché is exposed you can even put your finished pieces in the garden during spring and summer as they should be weather resistant.

Happy Crafting everyone... :)

Efcolor Ebook

Hi Everyone

I've got a new ebook available to view on issuu.

You will find a total of 12 Efcolor cool enamelling projects (many of which have appeared on Hochanda tv) within this ebook. I hope you like it!

One of the projects you'll find in it is the Garden Plaque...

For this one you need to first enamel it with white Efcolor...

Then add another layer of white Efcolor with a very light dusting of light turquoise. Add some light green along the bottom edge with touches of dark green, mallow, mauve and light blue before reheating it...

Then you can stamp your flowers and grasses with assorted StazOn ink pads and the bird with black StazOn ink. Add a little cognac Efcolor for the body of the bird and once reheated and cooled add a touch of blue acrylic for the rest of the bird's body. To finish add a thin layer of transparent Efcolor to seal everything in...

Happy enamelling everyone! :)

Further experiments with Efcolor & Wonder Embossing Crystals

Hi Everyone

Hope you're not letting the grotty weather or current political uncertainty get you down and are still finding time to do a spot of crafting. I've been having more fun with the Be Creative! Wonder Embossing Crystals and Efcolor Enamelling Powders...

And I'm loving the effects I can get by mixing the two!

Step 1. First cover the blank with a layer of Golden Yellow Efcolor. Heat on the tealight stove until melted.

Step 2. Cover with another layer of Golden Yellow Efcolor and then sprinkle a little Goldenite Wonder Embossing Crystals over the top.

Step 3. Place it back on the tealight stove to melt the second layer of powder. You'll find that the Efcolor powder melts first.

Then you'll find the smaller crystals will melt, followed by the larger ones.

(It's rather fascinating watching them melt, lol!)

Step 4. Use a needle tool or fine embossing tool to swirl the crystals whilst the blank is still on the tealight stove.

Step 5. Leave the blank on the tealight stove a little longer to allow the enamel to level out again. Then remove it from the heat and leave to cool.

And here are some more examples of Efcolor and Wonder Embossing Crystals combined on Efco Copper Blanks...

Mauve Efcolor & Picture Jasper Wonder Crystals

Red Efcolor & Goldstone Wonder Crystals

Dark Green Efcolor & Chrysoprase Wonder Crystals

Black Efcolor & Tiger Eye Wonder Crystals

Transparent Blue Efcolor & Carnelian Wonder Crystals

I think anyone who loves enamelling with Efcolor powders will agree with me that these Wonder Embossing Crystals open up new possibilities for creating some spectacular effects. :)

Happy Crafting!

Wonderful Wonder Embossing Crystals

Hi Everyone

Well last week's Efcolor One Day Special on Hochanda TV was an amazing success! I had a fab time...again! They are such a great team at the studios and the viewers are just the best!

On Saturday Justin and Gordon from Be Creative! were there with their Wonder Embossing Crystals and I just couldn't wait to get my hands on them. They work brilliantly on Efcolor blanks with the Efcolor Tealight Stove...

They also work with Efcolor powders too ;) ...

This sample I made by enamelling the blank with a thick layer of Efcolor powder first and then added a few Goldenite Wonder Crystals before replacing it on the stove to melt.

You can also use the Be Creative! Wonder Tape on the blanks when melting the Wonder Crystals on the Efcolor Tealight Stove...

What you will find is that the Be Creative! Wonder Embossing Crystals, when melted, are more liquid and less viscous than Efcolor powders. As such it makes swirling them very, very easy as you can see. :)

If you cover your blank with a thin layer of Efcolor powder and melt it before adding Wonder Embossing Crystals you will find that the Wonder Crystals will sit on the top...

If you want to combine Efcolor powders and the Wonder Crystals it's best to apply a layer of Efcolor and add the Wonder Crystals before you start heating your blank. That way you can swirl the combined powders if desired...

(btw: I'm really pleased this how this blank turned out! I think it looks really cool and artsy!)

For anyone thinking of investing in some Be Creative! Wonder Embossing Crystals here's the range as it stands at the moment...

Agate
Carnelian
Chrysoprase
Goldenite
Goldstone
Leopard Jasper
Lodolite Quartz
Red Aventurine
Verdite Green
Picture Jasper
Tiger Eye

Oh and by the way you can use Wonder Tape with Efcolor powders too if you want...

It acts a like the Efcolor Adhesive allowing you to cover set areas with a thin layer of Efcolor. ;)

So I think I'm going to have a lot more fun experimenting with Wonder Embossing Crystals and Efcolor :)

Happy Crafting Everyone!

What a corker!

Hi Everyone

Sorry for the lack of posts these last few weeks...it's been a somewhat hectic time with various family traumas of one sort or another which has led to little time for me in the studio.

However, I've finally managed to get back there and not a moment too soon in view of the Hochanda Efcolor One Day Special which launches this Friday at 8pm. Here's a sneak peek of some of the new blanks with the new embellishments that will be available on the shows...

I hope you can join me for the shows:
8pm Friday, 9am, 12 noon, 4pm & 7pm Saturday.

Don't forget you can email the studio if you have any questions for me - I'm always happy to answer them!
Look forward to seeing you there.

Happy Crafting everyone!

MIA this week, sorry!

Hi Everyone

Sorry I missed last week's posting deadline...a slight family emergency took precedence. Sadly it is still ongoing so I'm unable to post this week too. However, it will be business as usual next week. :)

Happy Crafting everyone!
